There are so many things that play a role in our health. From exercising and staying hydrated to maintaining healthy sleeping habits and preparing nourishing meals. A lot of factors contribute to our ability to achieve all of these daily tasks.
As a dietitian, I can say from personal experience, making sure I am drinking enough water, staying active, and getting in essential nutrients can be daunting.
This was especially true for me when I had hip surgery last fall. Sometimes it's even harder being in a health profession because you know all the things you should be doing.
When life gets busy or overwhelming, usually one or two things fall to the wayside to make space for more pressing things.
And it can feel like you're letting yourself down if you stop prioritizing activities you know are important.
However, if one of those things takes less priority, like our nutrition, we can feel negative effects. So much of how we feel is tied to our nutrition and eating patterns. This is why it's so important to find ways to eat well and feel nourished when life feels busy, overwhelming, or you feel burned out.
Luckily, as a dietitian, I have some tools in my toolbox that I recommend to clients, but I used for myself during this transitional period of having surgery and recovering.
Dietitian Tips for Eating Well During Busy or Burnout Periods:
Make Meals in Bulk and Freeze for Later
A change in your normal routine can happen overnight. When suddenly your life is disrupted, whether by chance or on purpose, it's very normal to feel overwhelmed. This is why when life is calmer, making sure you have options in your freezer can alleviate stress. I made sure to batch cook some of my favorite dishes like soups and chili, before I had surgery to ensure I had quick and nourishing meals on hand when I knew I would not be able to prepare home-cooked meals.
Keep a Fruit Bowl Around
Sometimes stress can cause individuals to feel hungrier than usual. When this happens, people might gravitate towards snacking more often. By buying some easily accessible fruits like apples or bananas and keeping them out, you can ensure you have a healthy choice that doesn't require a lot of time to prepare.
To feel fuller longer, try pairing a plain apple or banana with nut butter or a small handful of nuts.

Build Simple, Balanced Meals with Protein, Carbs, and Color
Nutrition does not have to be extremely complicated and meals do not have to be fancy. After a long day, it can be daunting to think of what to make for dinner for you and your family. This is my foolproof formula for making a nourishing meal. It saved me when I was pressed for time and exhausted, but finally able to get back into the kitchen post surgery.
A protein like fish or chicken, a carbohydrate like rice, potatoes or bulgur, and a color which could be a form of produce. Cooking any of these ingredients in a high-quality oil can help add flavor and beneficial fats.
There are so many options when using this formula to build a balanced meal. This could be fish, rice, and peppers, or grilled chicken, roasted potatoes, and sauteed asparagus. By making sure you have these three components to your meal, you are getting in all of your essential macronutrients to support balanced energy, satiety, and overall nutrient intake.
However, not everyone has the time to prepare all their meals each day. Adding in a few prepared meals for breakfast or dinner can be extremely helpful and affordable.
