Health Issues
All of Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating meals are prepared using the nutritional guidelines from health and nutrition experts.
If you or someone you know has any of the following medical conditions and needs to change eating habits, Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating is just what the doctor ordered.
Diabetes
A proper diet is one of the key elements that helps keep your blood sugar and diabetes under control. With the SSHE meal plan, you can be assured that you are always receiving calorie-controlled meals that are nutritionally balanced. SSHE recommends that you consult with your physician regarding which calorie plan to select. Some diabetics on SSHE have been able to reduce or eliminate their insulin and oral medication.
The overwhelming majority of Type II Diabetics will benefit from weight loss. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), type 2 diabetes accounts for 90-95% of all cases of diabetes and approximately 90% of patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight. -(American Diabetes Association: Type 2 diabetes (online))
Overweight patients with type II diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (often referred to as Borderline type II DM) can reap significant health benefits with modest weight reductions. Even when just starting on a lower calorie plan, before weight loss has started, a low calorie intake can produce significant reductions in blood glucose levels. – (Fabricatore & Wadden-Clinical Diabetes 2003)
Weight loss in diabetes helps in two ways: it lowers insulin resistance, thus allowing your natural insulin to do a better job at lowering blood glucose levels and it may allow for reduction or elimination of medications to treat diabetes. It also improves blood fat levels (i.e., cholesterol) and blood pressure.
Sugar in Type II Diabetes... Having your cake and eating it too!
Almost every person with diabetes can have foods with sugar in them. Eating a piece of cake will raise your blood glucose level, but so will eating corn on the cob, a sandwich or pasta. The truth is that sugar has gotten a bad reputation. In the body, sugary foods will send your blood sugar higher, but so will other foods, like the ones mentioned above. Moderation is key for sugary foods, as well as all foods since they impact your blood sugar levels.
Research studies show that, gram for gram, sugars, like table sugar, do not raise blood glucose any more quickly than do other carbohydrates, like potatoes, rice or pasta. This research holds true for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Basically, if you eat too much, your blood sugar will go up- no matter what kind of carbohydrates you eat.
According to the American Dietetic Association, there aren't "good foods" and "bad foods", rather good diets and bad diets. Balanced, healthful eating for weight loss or maintenance is crucial for overall good health and part of every good diet.
High Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all animal tissues, including meat, fish, poultry, egg yolk, and dairy products. If you consume too much cholesterol, which is easy to do if you don't pay attention to what you eat, it will deposit itself in your arteries. By doing this, it causes your arteries to become narrow and clogged, putting you at risk for a heart attack and other forms of heart disease. The SSHE meal plan is low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol - the perfect combination for a heart-healthy diet.
Our meals also provide sources of Omega-3 fatty acids in menu items containing flax seed, salmon, tuna, walnuts and green leafy vegetables. Foods with these types of ingredients have been found to have a positive impact on high cholesterol and heart health.
High Blood Pressure/Certain Cardiac problems
The SSHE meal plan is sodium restricted and calorie and portion-controlled. The combination of probable weight loss and sodium restricted meals could help lower blood pressure and decrease heart problems. Following our plan and eating our meals has the potential of reducing or eliminating some cardiac medications.
For every pound of weight lost, that is one less pound of workload for the heart.
Our meals have been found to be ideal for cardiac patients and many have seen great improvements in their health by following the plan. |
